04 08 - HOW WE STUMBLED UPON THE POPE'S FUNERAL

At 6 pm a motorcycle rally of about 200 passed us on Western Avenue. I could have counted 300 polish flags in the parade of Harleys and crotch rockets. Overall this is normal for Chicago. But at 6:30 we found ourselves in a sea of Polish bikers in front of a Church and a large statue of John Paul II in Ukrainian Village. The crowd was completely silent aside from the digital shutter sound of camera phones and some Polish whispering as Ave Maria played in its entirety through a megaphone. We didn't have the good camera with us, but managed as best we could. I feel lucky.

Only in Chicago would a motorcycle rally be held for the Pope.

Afterward, we went to get hot dogs. Life is beautiful.
